Detox Assistance Protocol
| Anytime you follow a detox program, it is possible to release toxins faster than your body can eliminate them. When the toxins build up, they can make you experience flu-like symptoms. This is called a herxheimer reaction or healing crisis. The liver is the main source, along with the kidneys and bowels, for eliminating toxins. This protocol is designed to help neutralize the toxins in them, so those organs can continue their work without being overwhelmed, which would cause toxins to backup in your system, making you feel sick.

The Detox Assistance Wellness Aid is used when your body becomes over-toxic, (whether you are doing a detox program or not) and it needs help eliminating the overload. The symptoms of toxic overload are referred to as a Herxheimer Reaction or Healing Crisis.
What Is The Herxheimer Reaction?
The Herxheimer reaction is an immune system reaction to the toxins (endotoxins) that are released when large amounts of pathogens are being killed off, and the body does not eliminate the toxins quickly enough. It is a signal from your body, saying that it needs help getting rid of toxins which have built up in your system. If you do not heed the warning and take action to assist, damage can occur.
What Do Toxins Do?
Toxins are harmful substances that are either produced within the body during metabolic processes or ingested, inhaled, and contracted through the skin on a daily basis. The human body has built-in mechanisms to eliminate these toxins. The liver and kidneys are the primary detoxifying organs that filter out toxins from the blood, which are then excreted or released through sweat.
If the body fails to flush out these toxins properly, they can build up over time and turn poisonous. These chemicals are known to inhibit certain enzymes that are required for essential body functions. Moreover, the toxic overload can damage your tissues, compromise organ functioning, and thereby give rise to a wide range of health problems.
Feeling Worse Before Feeling Better
The important thing to note is that worsening symptoms do not indicate failure of the treatment in question; in fact, usually just the opposite.
In most cases, the Herxheimer reaction is a short-term (a few hours to a few days, sometimes up to a week) detoxification reaction in the body. Most people feel relief in less than 24 hours.
As the body detoxifies, it is not uncommon to experience flu-like symptoms including:
- headache
- brain fog
- low-grade fever
- joint and muscle pain
- body aches
- sore throat
- general malaise
- body itch
- gastrointestinal distress (such as nausea, gas, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation)
This is a normal reaction that indicates that parasites, fungus, viruses, bacteria, or other pathogens are being effectively killed off. The biggest problem with the Herxheimer reaction is that people completely stop taking the supplement or medication that is causing the reaction, and thus discontinue the very treatment that is helping to make them better.
Although the experience may not make you feel particularly good, the Herxheimer reaction is actually a sign that healing is taking place. You just need to know how to work with it. Giving your body extra time to rest and heal, and backing off on your detox plan without completely stopping it, can help your body catch up.
Keeping that in mind; if your body is extremely toxic to begin with, as is the case if you have Candida overgrowth, Lyme disease, Syphilis, Diabetes, Liver or Kidney disease, etc., you will want to go more slowly with your detoxing, so you can avoid the dreaded “Herx”.
Detoxing does not always result in a Healing Crisis, but know that it is very common with the following conditions:
- Pathogens: lyme disease, syphilis, bacterial infections, parasite infections, fungal infections, yeast infections or candida overgrowth
- Heavy metal toxicity
- Toxic liver, kidney disease, diabetes
Some ways to assist your body in eliminating excess toxins:
- Soak in a Sea Salt bath, adding some Baking Soda and Epsom Salts to it. Not only does this encourage detoxification, but it’s a great way to relax and unwind. Your body is going through a lot and needs all the extra love and support it can get!
- Drink warm lemon water first thing in the morning (1 Tbsp. organic lemon juice to an 8 oz. glass of water). It aids in digestion and encourages bile flow , which leads to increased detoxification.
- Eat high fiber foods. Fibrous fruits and vegetables can help bind with toxins in the gut and flush them from your body.
- Get a massage. This will help you relax and will also activate the lymph system, another avenue for detoxification.

Pay attention to how your body feels and as it recovers you can resume your original treatment.
Did you Know?
You can get a Herxheimer reaction after you take certain probiotic supplements, and it can also happen after eating probiotic or fermented foods and drinks. This also surprises many people, as fermented foods are usually highly recommended by many health practitioners and are considered very healthy.
Kombucha, kefir, cultured yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi and other fermented foods may cause a herxheimer reaction, so if you are new to these, you may want to start with a very small serving size and see how your body responds. Gently coax your body into better health.
MTHFR?
Detoxification is complex. There are many genes that play a role in the cleansing process. But one gene stands out from the rest.
The MTHFR gene (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase). The MTHFR Gene Is the Detox Gene.
The MTHFR gene tells the body to make an enzyme that helps process two nutrients—folate and methionine. Both folate and methionine support the body in making and repairing DNA.
Young or old, the body makes, repairs, and silences DNA through a process called methylation and MTHFR impacts the process of methylation.
Methylation is a fundamental chemical exchange that happens in the body. You see it everywhere—in every cell, in every organ, and in every tissue.
While we all methylate, not everyone methylates at the same pace and the gene that heavily influences methylation is the MTHFR gene.
Variations in this gene affect how much or how little we go through this process. Without methylate—or with too little—we miss out on a molecule called glutathione.
Glutathione is the most important antioxidant in your body. It’s at the cornerstone of detoxification.
Because of this, those with variations in the MTHFR gene are often poor detoxifiers. They are unable to go through the methylation cycle at the pace they need to be healthy, and they are unable to produce enough glutathione.
How to Detox (Even with Bad Genes)
Scientists have found that key nutrients support DNA methylation and your capacity to make glutathione. A shortage of these nutrients has been linked to the inability to properly detox.
If you have a variant of the MTHFR gene that limits your ability to cleanse, it is more essential than ever to consume foods with these nutrients:
- Folate
- Vitamin B2
- Vitamin B6
- Vitamin B12
- Betaine
- Choline
Animal protein foods are particularly rich in B vitamins, especially liver.
Good sources of choline include eggs, liver, and cruciferous vegetables. The best place to find betaine is in shellfish, spinach, and beets.
Herbs can also boost methylation and detoxification, so they deserve a special mention. Milk thistle contains a group of flavonoids called silymarin. Silymarin goes directly to the liver (your detox organ), helping to repair damaged tissue and produce glutathione.
Likewise, wasabi root (along with other cruciferous vegetables) contains sulforaphane, which is notorious for its ability to support healthy DNA methylation.
Caloric restriction and short periods of fasting have also been shown to support detoxification. The key here is to make sure that you’re not starving yourself of essential nutrients. And when you do eat, always focus on delicious nutrient-dense foods and stop eating when you are 80% full.
More About Methylation
Many people haven’t even heard the word methylation. Yet it’s one of the most important biochemical processes happening continually in nearly every one of your cells.

Problems start arising when methylation is not optimized, meaning, it’s happening slower than it should be (or the opposite: it’s happening too fast!). In general, the methylation cycle slows down when it doesn’t have enough methyl-supportive nutrients and speeds up when it has too many.
