What is the Thyroid?
The thyroid is a tiny gland along the front of your windpipe, low on your neck. This tiny gland plays a big role in regulating your health.
The thyroid is part of the endocrine system, a system of different glands located throughout the body that make the hormones that regulate almost every part and function in your body. Each gland has different responsibilities.
How Does a Thyroid Imbalance Impact My Body?
When your thyroid is out of balance it produces either too much or too little of the different hormones it secretes. With an imbalanced thyroid, your body doesn’t receive the right amount of hormones it needs to function.
Overactive Thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
Hyperthyroidism occurs when your thyroid is overactive or overproduces thyroid hormones. Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder, is the primary cause of hyperthyroidism, but inflammation of the thyroid can also lead to excess hormones.
When not treated, hyperthyroidism leads to significant health problems with your bones, muscles, and heart. For women, it can also impact your menstrual cycle and fertility.
Symptoms of an overactive thyroid include:
- Racing heart
- Trouble sleeping
- Anxiety
- Unexplained weight loss
- Thinning hair
- Fragile skin
Underactive Thyroid (hypothyroidism)
Hypothyroidism results when your thyroid is underactive or doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones. An autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s disease causes the immune system to attack the thyroid and is the leading cause of hypothyroidism in America.
With an underactive thyroid, your body functions slow, including your metabolism. Symptoms of hypothyroidism are slow to appear and progress slowly. Initially, you might feel more tired than normal.
As hypothyroidism progresses you experience additional symptoms, including:
- Depression
- Fatigue
- Slow heart rate
- Weight gain or trouble losing weight
- Muscle aches
- Thinning hair<
- Dry skin
- Heavy menstrual cycles
- Constipation
- Underactive sweat glands
If left untreated, hypothyroidism can result in elevated cholesterol, increasing your risk for heart disease, as well as decreased mental and cognitive function.
Other Thyroid Conditions
While hyper and hypothyroidism are the most common forms of thyroid disease, other conditions can impact the health of the thyroid. These include thyroid nodules, goiters, thyroid swelling, and thyroid cancer.
Thyroid Disorder
If you have any thyroid disorder you need to detox.
The types of toxins that affect the thyroid are thus primarily substances that mimic thyroid hormone structure, contain halogens, or are heavy metals.
Mercury affects thyroid health by storing itself there, but can also affect many of the other systems in the body. One of the main reasons is because it can bind to any molecule in the body which contains sulfur, along with other sites in the cell. This can prevent certain enzymes from doing their job. So mercury can bind to the cells of the thyroid gland, which can result in a thyroid condition. Mercury interferes with many of the minerals necessary for thyroid hormone production, as well as the conversion of T4 to T3.
Toxic metals can further damage the thyroid by recruiting antibodies to attack the thyroid. This process contributes to the development of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD), such as Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
Pesticides and herbicides disrupt thyroid function by interfering with thyroid hormone gene expression, inhibiting the thyroid’s uptake of iodine, binding to thyroid hormone transport proteins, reducing cellular uptake of thyroid hormone, and increasing thyroid hormone clearance from the body.
If you happen to have a thyroid disorder, we also offer Wellness Aids the assist with detoxing chemicals and heavy metals. You can click the following links to view them. Detox – Chemicals Detox – Heavy Metals
