Alopecia?

Alopecia areata is thought to be an autoimmune condition. This occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue. Some people with this condition have a family history of alopecia.

Alopecia areata is seen in men, women, and children. In a few people, hair loss may occur after a major life event such as an illness, pregnancy, or trauma.

Hair loss is usually the only symptom. A few people may also feel a burning sensation or itching. Alopecia areata usually begins as 1 to 2 patches of hair loss. Hair loss is most often seen on the scalp. It may also occur in the beard, eyebrows, pubic hair, and arms or legs in some people.

Patches where hair has fallen out are smooth and round in shape. They may be peach-colored. Hairs that look like exclamation points are sometimes seen at the edges of a bald patch. If alopecia areata leads to total hair loss, it often occurs within 6 months after symptoms first start.

More on Hair Loss

Hair loss, also known as alopecia or baldness, refers to a loss of hair from part of the head or body. Typically at least the head is involved. The severity of hair loss can vary from a small area to the entire body. Typically inflammation or scarring is not present. Hair loss in some people causes psychological distress.

Common types include: male-pattern hair loss, female-pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, and a thinning of hair known as telogen effluvium. The cause of male-pattern hair loss is a combination of genetics and male hormones, the cause of female pattern hair loss is unclear, the cause of alopecia areata is autoimmune, and the cause of telogen effluvium is typically a physically or psychologically stressful event. Telogen effluvium is very common following pregnancy.

Less common causes of hair loss without inflammation or scarring include the pulling out of hair, certain medications including chemotherapy, HIV/AIDS, hypothyroidism, and malnutrition including iron deficiency.

Causes of hair loss that occurs with scarring or inflammation include fungal infection, lupus erythematosus, radiation therapy, and sarcoidosis.

Hair Diseases

Hair diseases are disorders primarily associated with the follicles of the hair.
A few examples are:

  • Alopecia
  • Bubble hair deformity
  • Hair casts
  • Hair loss
  • Hypertrichosis
  • Ingrown hair
  • Monilethrix
  • Premature greying of hair
  • Pattern hair loss
  • Trichorrhexis invaginata

Many hair diseases can be associated with distinct underlying disorders. Piedra are fungal diseases.

Hair disease may refer to excessive shedding or baldness (or both). Balding can be localised or diffuse, scarring or non-scarring. Increased hair can be due to hormonal factors (hirsutism) or non-hormonal (hypertrichosis). Scalp disorders may or may not be associated with hair loss.

Panthenol

Panthenol is a humectant, drawing moisture in, and experts say it helps nourish and moisturize hair and skin, not dry it out. Panthenol is a humectant meaning it holds and binds water, and these properties mean that it is ideal when it comes to keeping water in the skin.

It also works as an emollient which means it can moisturize and soothe the skin, as well as help, protect it from environmental factors and skin stresses.

Hypertrichosis

A rare and curious condition that causes excessive hair growth anywhere on a person’s body. Hypertrichosis is sometimes known as werewolf syndrome.

Monilethrix

Another rare condition caused by a defect in the hair shaft resulting in hair which appears dry, dull, and brittle, and which breaks spontaneously or with mild trauma.

Trichorrhexis Invaginata aka Bamboo Hair?

Bamboo hair is a hair shaft abnormality that causes the hair strands to look similar to the knots in a bamboo stalk. Normal, healthy hair strands appear smooth under a microscope. Bamboo hair appears to contain nodules (bumps) or evenly spaced ridges.

Bamboo hair is a feature of a disease called Netherton syndrome. Most cases of bamboo hair are caused by Netherton syndrome. It’s an inherited condition that results in red, flaky skin all over the body and allergy problems.

Bamboo hair can affect hair on top of the head, the eyebrows, and the eyelashes.

What are the symptoms of bamboo hair?

The symptoms of bamboo hair can include:

• hair that breaks easily
• hair strands that have a knotty appearance
• a loss of eyelashes
• a loss of eyebrows
• sparse hair growth or hair loss pattern
• dry hair
• hair that’s lackluster
• spiky hair
• short hair due to consistent breakage
• hair on the eyebrows that resembles matchsticks

Children born with Netherton syndrome may have red, flaky skin. They may not develop signs of bamboo hair until after 2 years of age.

Microsporum Canis

You might be familiar with ringworm by a different name, like “athlete’s foot.” Ringworm in dogs is not just a problem for your pup. Humans can get Microsporum canis, too, which is another reason why it is important to take this condition seriously.

Young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are at an increased risk of contracting ringworm from dogs, but anyone can contract this unsightly and uncomfortable parasite.

In humans, ringworm presents as a roughly circular rash that is often red and itchy.
